My favorite Japanese hardcore excepting Detestation. The vocal performance is one of my favorite ever (some of the most manic yelling you'll ever hear.) The first track is dominated by the vocals. The second track is just a distorted motherfucker of a song. Somehow their least popular release, it's by far their best and clearly their most unique.
Cullman is a small town in Alabama that is actually too redneck for the rest of Alabama. In fact, I think it's one of the few places where the KKK is still alive and well. So, out of this horribly shitty environment, the most elite sludge you've never heard is born. This album is gritty, filthy, lo-fi and relentlessly heavy. "Doomchild" and "Clan of Stone: Foggy Mountain Breakdown" are seriously two of the heaviest recordings ever made. It's a shame the only material they recorded before they broke up was this and a split with Mose, and I'm not even sure if either of those are still in print or how many were initially printed in the first place.
K2 uses a harsh noise soundset of metal swangin n bangin to make music more consuming than it is violent. Like standing in the eye of a hurricane of shrapnel. A 70 minute monster but worth it.
Exactly what I like in my hardcore: powerful vocals that stand out in the mix, sharp guitar, and an off-kilter feel to the whole thing. The sample on Zone is a little too long when listening to this on repeat but otherwise it's perfect. A little oddity to cherish.
Low-key rap from Fort Worth. It's the kind of sad but not mopey rap that you can just put on and chill to and introspect. It's kind of comforting in a way. It starts growing on you because it's so easy to come back to. I guess it's hard to explain an album like this because it isn't exceptional, but it doesn't have to be and you still love it. Just download it is what I'm saying.
EDIT: This is growing on me in the same way that Look What You Did To Me did, meaning it's really climbing up in my favorites. Don't sleep on this.
Grind/noisecore masterpiece that slays the entire family. Overwhelming torrent of muddy instrumentation and hideously powerful vocals. A new favorite for sure.

Tommy Wright III is one of the most well known non-Three 6 rappers from Memphis, mostly based on his album On the Run, which is good, but not quite as good as this one. Feel Me Before They Kill Me is less gangsta, more grungy and sad. This is basically great all the way through, but Hell on Earth and especially Down to Ride are just otherworldly. Listening to Tommy peak the mic while shouting the chorus in the latter is the closest I've come to rap transcendence.
I don't even consider this a real post because I'm just pointing you to the datpiff page but this is most of what I've been listening to recently. If you think Turn on the Lights and Tony Montana are masterpieces you'll love this. If you're still complaining about autotune, you might not. It's hard to imagine this kind of music being done better.
I used to think this was kind of kitschy and weird and not as good as Love and Other Crimes but nope, this is a masterpiece too. Probably better, in fact. One of the best albums I've ever heard. That's all.
Yeah yeah yeah everyone knows Man Is the Bastard but this shit doesn't get much attention for some reason. I always liked them most at their most primal with the vocals pushed forward in the mix (Our Earth's Blood, anyone?) and that's exactly what you get with this one. At first I only liked those first really short fucking ragers but now I'm all FOREVER HAS BEGUN 24/7 straight up. This whole thing is the shit.
This album is better than the more well known Trapped Inside, a powerviolence classic. It doesn't have the crazy awesome vocals of that other album but makes up for it with piercing guitar work and an appropriate production job. Trapped Inside is just a bit too muddy for their style, though still a good album. This one grows on me with each listen, really charming and fun in some way and very impressive for coming 7 years after their classic. Also has one of the illest album covers of all time.
This is the best rap album I’ve heard in months. It has this
beautifully consistent dark atmosphere which I think is the best complement to
G-funk synths and attitude. There are zero duds. Simple
lyrics, great beats, and consistency. Seriously perfect. You always think it’s
going to drop off with the next song but it never does. If you’re a lyrics-stickler
or no fun, you might not like it, but otherwise I doubt it’s possible to
dislike. Unfairly obscure.
Hello mortals, time for a resurrection in this bitch. Starting a group blog can be disappointing because you don't know if people are going to post or not. So I'm just going to start posting stuff, probably about once a week, and if the others want to come back and post at some point they can. Gonna drop most of the pretense of the extraordinarily convoluted bullshit I wrote about some of those albums. Even capitalization is kind of annoying me right now, we'll see how this works out. Anyway, I'll be posting some cool shit so pay attention if like me you're a fan of cool shit.
Extremely dense, atmospheric dark ambient that sounds like it was recorded 30 years later than its retro synths would suggest. Makes me think of a colder, darker Tangerine Dream + scawy German vocals. Definitely recommended for fans of minimalist drone type stuff.
In my limited exposure to soul, this album has been singular in consistency and emotional resonance. Though the story of the album concerns a woman desperately lost in life, the production is beautifully varied in mood. Doris Duke herself demands attention with a voice simultaneously powerful and always warning of shattering (if you'll forgive the strange, strange comparison, it is the same captivating balance which Max Varnier struck on Last Tape Before Doomsday). The general sentiment of the album is one of melancholy but it is executed by sensible musicians whose restraint and good taste keep this from being kitsch.

which repeated exposure has made seem organic and the clearly artificial is
what makes Program Music I so enticing to so many people. These same two elements conspire on Étude no.3 pour cordes et poulies, albeit existing in their own form rather than conforming to a predictable electronic structure. The main difference, though?
Bulk is an unsung lo-fi indie classic. The story goes that Jack Logan, a pool motor repairman from Athens, GA, spent a decade rackin up quite a catalog of bedroom folk material, something to the tune of 600 songs. Luckily he got noticed for making some comic starring Pete Buck of R.E.M. as a superhero, so here are 42 tracks from that selection. This dude is a genius. Jack doesn't stick to one particular genre, hopping from folk to post-punk to country to blues and more with every track. The only thing that remains constant is the feeling that you're listening to an intensely personal bedroom album by a reclusive muse. My faves include "The Parishioners," which features the late, great fellow Athens resident Vic Chesnutt on vocals, a badass stripped-down cover of Neil Young's "On The Beach"... shit, there's too much on here to choose from. It's a shame that the most attention that this guy's ever gotten came from his part on an episode of Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast. On second thought, that isn't a shame. That rules. great episode btw
Originally a Kiwi, from Te Awanga, Connan and his band of misfits relocated to London, bringing their murky psych-pop with them. Funnily enough, they have supported Crowded House of all people (surely the NZ music scene is not that small?), though I would assume those kind of high profile gigs have not helped so much in connecting with the right audience. Considering the return to sun-bleached psych in the indiesphere, I cannot understand why this guy is not more popular. Check the video for a more energetic example of his oddball pop.
